The definition of infertility is the inability to conceive after a 12-month period of unprotected sexual intercourse for women under the age of 35, and an inability to conceive after a 6-month period of unprotected sexual intercourse for women over the age of 35.

Our infertility services include patient consultation to understand health history and testing both partners to determine the underlying cause of infertility. Testing for men usually involves a semen analysis. Testing for women includes a reproductive organ examination, ultrasound, and laboratory testing. For 85 to 90 percent of couples struggling with infertility, testing reveals the underlying cause of the condition. Once diagnosed, we will develop a personalized treatment plan to treat the cause or causes of the condition.

For some patients struggling to conceive, a solution to their infertility may be as simple as understanding when their body is ovulating. Other patients may need ovulation-inducing medications or intrauterine insemination to help conceive.

Infertility Evaluation

To conceive, ovulation must be able to occur, Fallopian tubes must be open and undamaged, and sperm must be present. If one or more of these factors are compromised, patients are diagnosed as “truly infertile.” Some couples struggle with infertility even though all factors are met and are diagnosed as “sub-fertile.”

During infertility treatment, Infinity Medical Group evaluates each patient and each couple, to develop a treatment plan specific to each infertility situation. All patients will undergo measurements of the hormones that control ovulation and egg quality, imaging tests to check the Fallopian tubes and other reproductive organs for damage, and men will undergo a semen analysis to check for volume, sperm count, motility, and morphology.

Most couples evaluated for infertility go on to conceive after testing determine the underlying cause of their condition. For 10 to 15 percent of infertile couples, testing and evaluation may determine that a reason for their infertility cannot be determined. This situation is known as “unexplained infertility,” and may be a result of irregular ovulation or variable sperm count that cannot be determined through diagnostics.

Some of these couples go on to conceive successfully after infertility treatment or without medical intervention.
