The Ideal Profile

Is what's trending now always the right choice for everyone? Sometimes styles just don't work for every individual and may mean you need to find a different fit, color or thing to do - and that is OK! This also works with cosmetic procedures. One filler may be right for you, but not right for someone else - and the same goes for surgeries.

Breast augmentation is one of those procedures. Even though it was one of the popular cosmetic surgery procedures last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, and for many years, it is not the best procedure for everyone. Find out who is the right candidate for this procedure in this blog from Dr. Mona Alqulali.

First thing's first. The choice to get breast implants is a very personal decision, and for many women it means a significant payoff. Benefits of the procedure include more confidence, less discomfort, better-fitting clothes and a more proportioned shape.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

If you're considering breast augmentation, here are a few basic criteria you should know to make sure the procedure is right for you:

Good health. Women who are undergoing the breast-augmentation procedure should be in good physical health and at a healthy weight.

Breast shape. If your breasts are sagging, flattened or elongated, the breast-augmentation procedure is right for you. If your breasts are asymmetrical or you don't have adequate cleavage or breast volume, the breast-implant procedure may also be right for you as well.

Good habits. Ideally, good candidates do not smoke. You will have to quit for weeks before and after your surgery. Also, we suggest limiting alcohol consumption before your procedure.

Emotional health matters. In addition to being in good physical health, it is also crucial for you to be in good health emotionally, too, and ready to go through the procedure and recovery. You should also know the risks of the procedure and the results you can expect.

Age. Did you know that there is a minimum age requirement for breast implants? For saline implants, the FDA requires patients be at least 18 years old. Individuals who want silicone implants must be at least 22 years of age.

Not-So-Great Candidates

Some women are not ideal candidates for breast-augmentation surgery, including:

  • Those who are in poor health, have breast cancer or have had an abnormal cancer screening
  • Those with chronic illness or infections
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Those who have unrealistic expectations for their surgery
