Video Sites Not a Credible Source for Information About Cosmetic Surgery

Is YouTube a credible resource when it comes to researching information about cosmetic surgery? According to a new study by Rutgers University, it is not.

The recent study revealed that in many instances, the individuals shown in YouTube videos giving advice about cosmetic procedures were not qualified to advise on the procedures they were performing or portraying or were not qualified medical providers at all.

New Study Reveals Surgery Safety

A recent study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons affirms that outpatient plastic surgery procedures are safe.

The study, published in the April issue of the organization's journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, analyzed more than 20 years of information collected from 26,000 plastic surgery procedures.

The data, collected between 1995 and 2017, came from procedures performed at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute.


The DPSI is an accredited outpatient surgical facility in Dallas, Texas.

The majority of the procedures were breast procedures, including breast implant augmentations. Liposuction treatments were also analyzed during the study.

Breast Reduction Increasing in Popularity

Breast-reduction surgery was in demand in 2017, according to new statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The breast-reduction procedure surgically removes unwanted fat, skin and glandular tissue to bring oversized or pendulous breasts into better proportion with the rest of the body.


Large breasts can develop for many reasons, including because of being overweight or sudden weight gain, genetics, changes in hormones, the use of some medications, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

There were 43,635 breast-reduction procedures performed in the United States in 2017, an 11 percent increase over 2016, when the number of breast-reduction procedures dipped 4 percent.

The reason for the increased demand? Plastic surgeons say that more women are seeking surgery to get the breasts they want after years living with large breasts.
