Abnormal Pap Smears

Pap smears are designed to detect changes in the cells of the cervix. Abnormal Pap results do not necessarily mean cervical cancer or a diagnosis of HPV. Abnormal Pap smear results may indicate a health condition like inflammation or infection. An abnormal Pap smear may also indicate hyperkeratosis, a condition in which the tissue of the cervix thickens over time. Some patients have an abnormal test result simply because of the presence of atypical cells.

If a Pap smear comes back as abnormal, Dr. Alqulali may choose to schedule a colposcopy procedure to take a biopsy sample of any abnormal tissues. The colposcopy procedure is a procedure performed in the office and gives Dr. Alqulali a closer look at the cervix to visually look for physical changes in tissue.

False positives can sometimes occur with Pap smears, but our approach is to take every precaution possible to protect your health and counsel each patient individually on about their results.

Women should have a Pap smear each year to protect their health. Some patients may require a different schedule depending on their health history or a family history of cervical cancer.
