As we age our skin becomes more susceptible to wrinkles and sagging. Sun exposure and years of exercising the facial muscles as we smile, frown or squint also contribute to tissue breakdown of the skin. Fortunately there are innovative cosmetic treatments and products that will help to ease the aging process and sustain one’s youth.
Facial fillers, also known as dermal fillers, and injectables are temporary to long-lasting solutions administered through a few tiny injections to targeted areas of the face.
We provide a variety of facial fillers, including:
Botox® a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) . It can also be used around the eyes and mouth to eliminate fin lines,
One 10-minute treatment—a few tiny injections—and within days there's a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, which can last from 3-6 months.
No anesthesia is required although we can numb the area with anesthetic cream prior to injecting. You can be in and out of our office without downtime. Within days you will notice a difference!
Injectable soft tissue fillers are one of the most common cosmetic procedures for adding volume to the skin. As we age, the production of two proteins called collagen and elastin in the skin decreases. These proteins are what create fullness in the skin. Sun exposure, diet, and smoking also speed up the aging process, making the wrinkles even more prominent.
Soft tissue fillers cannot correct facial lines with the long lasting effects of surgery, but in many cases, they provide an excellent non-surgical option to improve the appearance of wrinkles. The most commonly treated wrinkles are those around the nose and mouth, known as the nasolabial lines and marionette lines. Soft tissue fillers are also an excellent option for patients wishing to have more full and youthful appearing lips.
Common brand names of soft-tissue fillers are: Restylane®, Hylaform®, Juvederm®, Radiesse®, Sculptra®. The results of injections and the length of time results will last vary by each individual and by the treatment.
Collagen products are one of the original soft tissue fillers used over 20 years ago. Collagen gives structure to the skin and is used to add volume to lips and fill in fine lines. If used, cosmetic surgeons use human-derived collagen, which does not require allergy testing. Collagen injections, compared to other dermal fillers, do not last very long. Most people only see results for a couple of months before needing to be reinjected. Most providers prefer using hylauronic acid fillers, which last longer.
Juvederm and Restylane
Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid products available that have various characteristics.
These fillers can be used to fill hollow areas of the face, including the cheeks and lips. Hyaluronic acid gel does not pose an allergy risk for patients and there is no risk of transmitting animal diseases by injection. The results patients receive from hyaluronic acid products last approximately four to six months.
Sculptra® Aesthetic is indicated for use in immune-competent people as a single regimen for correction of shallow to deep nasobial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles.
Radiesse is a biocompatible, FDA-approved filler for deep nasolabial lines. With this treatment, small calcium microspheres are injected under the skin with a fine needle. The body then forms collagen around the calcium providing a long lasting result. Effects can last up to a year. This filler is a great treatment for nasolabial lines. Radiesse® is not suited to be injected in the lips because it is too firm and does not feel natural.
Fat can be harvested from your own body to plump up facial features with your own fat. This is a safe procedure that is non-allergenic because it uses fat from your body. With this treatment, Dr. Mona can recontour your face or other parts of your body as well!) and add definition to the cheeks and chin.
With fat transfer, fat is taken by liposuction from a place on the body where it is easily removed such as the thighs or buttocks. It is then reinjected into your body creating a cosmetic effect. Not every area of the body responds well to fat transplantation but the face is one area that it works well.
Dr. Mona performs fat transfer on an outpatient basis. A local anesthetic is injected into both the area from which she takes the fat and the treatment site. The fat is removed from the donor site using a small needle that is attached to a syringe.
Once removed, the fat is processed to remove excess fluids, and then reinjected beneath a wrinkle using another needle. The procedure is completed when the wrinkle is filled.
