Wait to Work Out

Botox is likely the most well known cosmetic service in the world. Over the past 10 years, it has increased significantly in demand and popularity – and for one major reason: It’s easy and (relatively) painless. Botox requires just a few minutes, a few injections and no recovery time. But, no recovery time does not mean patients should jump right back into their regular routines, or more specifically, their daily workout routines. Dr. Mona Alqulali performs Botox and other injectables but cautions her patients to take a day or two off from the gym after treatment.

What Is Botox?

Botox is the brand name for endotoxin type A, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Although it may sound a little scary, Botox is completely safe for cosmetic applications. Botox works as a powerful anti-aging treatment; it temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles to help prevent the development of wrinkles. It is an excellent way to help reduce fine lines, such as crow’s feet and laugh lines.

Can You Work Out After Getting Botox?

You can work out after getting Botox injections, but it can compromise your results. Dr. Alqulali suggests waiting at least 48 hours before hitting the gym, lifting weights or running. But, why?

The primary reason you should skip your workout after getting Botox injections is blood circulation. Working out causes increased blood flow, which, while a good thing for your overall health, is a bad thing after Botox. This is because the increased blood flow can carry away some of the Botox you just received. This diminishes the effects of the treatment.

When Botox is carried to other body areas, it can lead to temporary paralysis in those areas.

If you bruise after your Botox injections, exercising can exacerbate your reaction, too. It can also increase the chance that you may have pain and swelling after your procedure, too.

What About Yoga?

While yoga is great for a lot of things, such as stress relief and stretching, it’s not great after you’ve received Botox or other injections. To maximize results and minimize complications, Dr. Alqulali recommends staying upright for at least four hours after treatment. This also means avoiding doing the downward-facing dog and other poses for a few days.
