Look Into the Future

As 2018 comes to an end, predictions for what will be the hot new cosmetic procedure in the new year are already beginning, according to the United Kingdom’s Daily Mail online edition.

Some say that silicone breast implants may become ancient history as a new high-tech “hybrid” breast-augmentation procedure is set to come on the cosmetic surgery scene next year.

Other procedures increasing in popularity include the ultrasonic rhino-sculpture, a procedure that promises a new nose without the invasive surgery, swelling and long recovery time associated with the conventional rhinoplasty procedure.

Some also predict that 4-D imaging technology will take procedures to the next level.

3-D technology has allowed cosmetic surgeons to help patients see what they would look like with changes such as breast implants or liposuction. 4-D imaging will enable providers to project a full-body scan of a patient on to a mirror screen that shows the patient what they would look like after a cosmetic procedure on a full-body-proportion scale.

“Imaging and augmented reality can help patients get an idea of what they will look like after certain procedures and allow them to choose an implant size that would be flattering to them or help them see what they would look like with a breast reduction or reconstruction,” said Dr. Mona Alqulali, a cosmetic surgeon in Clinton, Iowa.

“Some individuals have a hard time visualizing what they would look like post-procedure,” Alqulali said.

Another cosmetic treatment expected to be in demand is lip-lifts. The lip-lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the philtrum, the space between the bottom of the lip and the nose. The lip-lift helps to raise up drooping lips, creating more defined edges and a plumper pout.

The lip-lift would provide a more permanent result than what is achieved with lip fillers.

“Lip fillers are very popular but require maintenance injections every few months to keep up the look,” Alqulali said.

Next year is also expected to bring a new face-lift procedure: the 3D face-lift. The procedure is described as a way to make a face fuller and more youthful without the “pulled” appearance of some surgical face-lift procedures.

The 3D face-lift helps to achieve a younger-looking visage by pulling the tissue of the face back onto the cheekbones instead of pulling it back.

The procedure requires minimal incisions and less downtime than traditional face-lifts.

“Mini and micro face-lifts are gaining in popularity because they can provide the look people want without the risks and downtime associated with more involved surgery,” Alqulali said.

So, what is the “hybrid” breast augmentation? It is a procedure that combines both implant augmentation and fat transfers to increase the size of the breasts. This allows the breasts to look more natural and helps to prevent sagging over time.

Some also believe that adding fat to the breast-augmentation procedure can help reduce the chance of developing capsular contracture, or hardened scar tissue around the breast.

Fat for the hybrid breast augmentation is taken from another area of the patient’s body and is then injected around the implants. Using this procedure can also mean that implants do not have to be placed under the muscle to achieve a more natural-looking appearance.

While these procedures may be up-and-coming cosmetic treatments, Alqulali cautions potential patients to do their homework on their procedures and their providers.

“Patients should thoroughly research the procedure they are seeking as well as the provider they are choosing. You want to make sure that the provider you choose is experienced and also licensed to perform that particular procedure,” Alqulali said.
