Have you heard that old saying (often said tongue-in-cheek) about getting your beauty sleep? Most people talk about beauty sleep as a joke, but what if we told you that beauty sleep is a real thing? When you get enough sleep, your skin looks better, and when you don’t get enough sleep, well, you’re at risk of premature aging, wrinkles and even blemishes. Find out how you can use sleep to benefit your skin with these tips from Infinity Medical Group.
Get Plenty of Rest
When you don’t sleep enough, it shows. Over time the skin can become dull and sallow, which makes you look older than you are. We suggest that you try to get between seven and eight hours each night to keep your skin looking healthy and keep your body healthy, too.
Take Care of Your Skin Before You Turn In
Part of your beauty sleep is getting your skin ready, too. We suggest that you establish a solid skin care routine that includes, at the bare minimum, washing and moisturizing. We also recommend that you use products that contain retinol to help keep the signs of aging away.
We also suggest that you switch to a satin or silk pillowcase because these fabrics lay smooth on your pillow, which means less pressure and sleep lines on your face.
Be Careful How You Sleep
Now that we’ve told you how much sleep to get, we want to talk about sleep position. Why does what position you sleep in matter to your skin? It matters because how you sleep can increase your chance of developing wrinkles, lines and creases. If you sleep on your stomach or your side, your head creates a force on your skin between your face and your pillow. This force, over time, causes collagen and elastin, two proteins that are critical to your skin, to break down. When these proteins break down, your skin develops wrinkles and begins to sag.
So, to prevent force on your face, we suggest that you sleep on your back instead of your side or stomach.
