What Is Stress Urinary Incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is a condition that is caused by stress on the bladder that leads to unintentional bladder leakage. Most people with stress urinary incontinence experience symptoms when sneezing, coughing, running or jumping.

Women are more likely to develop stress urinary incontinence because of aging, pregnancy and childbirth. Stress urinary incontinence can also develop because of constipation, being overweight, straining during defecation and excess coughing.

What Can You Do About Stress Urinary Incontinence?

While there are options for surgical interventions to treat stress urinary incontinence such as bladder sling or bladder mesh procedures, there are other less invasive ways to address the condition and other pelvic floor problems. One of these ways is by doing Kegel exercises.

What Are Kegel Exercises?

Kegel exercises are designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Strong pelvic floor muscles help to support the bladder, but also the uterus, small intestine and rectum.

How to Do Kegel Exercises Correctly?

First, Identify What the Kegel Muscles Are. To do so, stop urination during midstream for a few seconds and then resume urination. The muscles that stop your urine flow are your Kegel muscles. 

Next, Practice Kegels Anywhere. Do so by tightening your muscles and holding for five seconds. Then relax for five seconds. Repeat in sets of five and rest for five to 10 seconds between sets. Try to perform your Kegels routine three times a day.

Focus and Breathe. While you're doing your Kegel exercises, be sure to focus and breathe. Breathing helps you perform the exercises correctly and not tighten the wrong areas.
